Abstract
This study examined the relationships between middle school students’ perceptions of parental parenting attitudes and their cyberbullying perpetration, with particular attention to the mediating roles of depression and relational aggression. A self-report survey was administered to first-, second-, and third-grade middle school students in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, yielding a total of 301 valid responses. Results indicated that positive parenting attitudes were negatively associated with cyberbullying perpetration, while cyberbullying perpetration was positively associated with both depression and relational aggression. Depression was also positively correlated with relational aggression. Mediation analyses revealed that both depression and relational aggression partially mediated the relationship between parenting attitudes and cyberbullying perpetration. Moreover, a sequential double mediation was identified: adolescents who perceived parenting attitudes negatively reported, higher levels of depression, which in turn increased relational aggression and ultimately elevated cyberbullying perpetration. These findings underscore the importance of parental attitudes, as well as adolescents’ internalizing and relational factors, in understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying cyberbullying perpetration. Practical implications for counseling and prevention interventions are discussed.
