Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to examine the mediating effect of conflict resolution and the moderated mediation effect of school violence victimization experience in the relationship between positive parenting attitudes and defending behaviors among middle school students. This study is based on an integrated theoretical framework of social learning theory and stress coping theory. Design/methodology/data/approach: Data were drawn from the 6th wave (9th grade) of the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, consisting of 2,242 middle school students (1,128 males, 50.3%). Process Macro was employed to test mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation effects, and bootstrapping was used to verify the significance of indirect effects. Findings/Results: First, school violence victimization experience moderated the relationship between positive parenting attitudes and defending behaviors. Second conflict resolution demonstrated a significant mediating effect in this relationship. Third, the mediating effect of conflict resolution was significantly moderated by school violence victimization experience. Value: This study expands our understanding of the developmental mechanisms of defending behaviors in school violence contexts and confirms the importance of positive parenting attitudes and conflict resolution skills. By identifying the differential effects of victimization experience on defending behavior development, this study provides practical implications for developing customized intervention strategies to enhance defending behaviors among middle school students. This study further suggests the necessity of differentiated approaches based on students' victimization experiences in school violence prevention and intervention programs.
