Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop and validate a career choice values test for college students. The research questions addressed were: “What are the concepts and components of career choice values?” and “Is the career choice values test valid?” Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted in three phases. First, the concept of career choice values was defined through a literature review, identifying four types and 17 sub-factors. Second, a panel of 13 experts verified the content validity of the concepts and components through a survey. Based on this, 85 initial test items were developed across four career choice value types: Path Maker, Guardian, Accommodator, and Proactive. Third, data were collected from 472 university students in the Gyeonggi and Seoul metropolitan areas. The sample was randomly divided: 236 responses were used for exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and the remaining 236 for evaluating the formative measurement model. Findings/Results: The study led to the development of the Career Choice Values Test, consisting of four components (Path Making orientation, Guardian orientation, Accommodating orientation, and Proactive orientation) and 17 sub-factors, comprising a total of 78 items. The test was validated as a reliable and valid measurement tool through formative measurement model evaluation. Value: This test was developed to assist college students in navigate career dicision-making in a rapidly changing social and educational landscape. By offering an objective assessment of career choice values, the test enables students to gain a clearer understanding of their value orientation and to design more structured and value-aligned career paths.
