Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of a Somatic-Oriented group counseling program in reducing psychosocial stress and enhancing overall quality of life among university students. Participants were 32 students from D City (experimental group: 16; wait-list control group: 16). The experimental group participated in ten 90-minute sessions. Program effectiveness was assessed using the Psychosocial Stress Scale and the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS), with data collected at pretest, posttest, and 4-week follow-up. Quantitative data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS 23.0, complemented by qualitative content analysis of participants' reflections. Results indicated a decreasing trend in psychosocial stress across both groups, though the between-group difference was not statistically significant. However, the effect size analysis for ORS revealed a medium effect (partial η²=0.087), indicating that the experimental group's quality of life significantly improved and was maintained at follow-up. Qualitative findings further revealed that participants in the experimental group reported primarily bottom-up change experiences, such as enhanced bodily awareness. These results suggest that Somatic-Oriented group counseling holds promise for promoting psychosocial stress management and improving quality of life in university students through embodied, bottom-up change processes. The study provides valuable preliminary evidence to inform the development and evaluation of Somatic-Oriented interventions in university counseling settings.
