언어는 무형유산의 매개체이고 다수의 사회적, 문화적 의미를 대대로전수한다. 알타이 언어 대부분을 포함, 세계 언어의 절반이 현재 절멸위기에 놓여 있다. 언어의 상실은 문화와 지적 다양성의 상실을 의미한다. 본 글은 절멸 위기의 알타이 언어 보존을 위한 언어학 프로젝트에 대해 얘기한다. 한국알타이학회가 수행한 절멸 위기의 알타이 언어현지 조사 연구 프로젝트 ASK REAL팀은 38개의 알타이 언어에서 언어자원(linguistic resources)을 수집했고 55개 알타이 언어 모두에 대한 포괄적인 디지털 아카이브를 구축할 계획이다. 광활한 유라시아 전역에 걸쳐 소수민족 언어 공동체 현지조사 실시, 멀티미디어 데이터로거의 3천개의 어휘 항목, 수백 개의 문법 구문, 수백 개 일상 회화 예제를 모았다. 이렇게 모은 데이터를 표준 디지털 포맷으로 전환해 데이터베이스에서 관리하고, 자료 일부를 누구나 액세스할 수 있는 웹 인터페이스를 통해 현재 제공 중이다. 외국 사용자를 위한 다국어 주석또한 제공된다.
Abstract
Language is a vehicle of intangible heritage and transmits many social and cultural concepts from generation to generation. Half of the world's languages, including most of the Altaic languages, are now in danger of extinction. The loss of a language means the loss of cultural and intellectual diversity. This paper describes a linguistic project which aims to preserve the endangered Altaic languages. The ASK REAL (Altaic Society of Korea, Researches on Endangered Altaic Languages) team has gathered linguistic resources from thirty-eight Altaic languages and plans to build an extensive digital archive of all fifty-five of them. Through field research in minority language communities spread over a vast area of Eurasia, we acquired nearly three thousand lexical items of multi- media data, a few hundred grammatical constructions and another few hundred examples of daily conversation for each language. The data is converted into a standard digital format and managed in a database. A small part of the collection is currently available to the public via an easily accessible web interface with multilingual annotations for international users.
