Abstract

This consideration is a paper on Jinkwansa Temple’s character revealed newly on the line of anti-Japanese movement at the same time as illuminating Baek Chowol’s anti-Japanese movement, as a monk who was in centering around independence movement in the Korean Buddhist circle under the Japanese Empire. Baekchowol was a monk who spread out anti-Japanese movement continuously from 1919 until he died for the country while fighting for independence from the Japanese at Cheongju jail in 1944. But so far the whole story about his life, independence movement etc. were almost unknown to the general public. I researched about the whole story of his life in awareness of Baek Chowol’s significance in ten years ago. By the way the dozen pieces of materials on considering which Baek Chowol kept were excavated at Jinkwansa Temple of Eunpyeong District, Seoul on May in 2009. The contents and meaning of the materials excavated then were coveraged through media widely. The existence of Jinkwansa temple where the deep relationship with Baek Chowol as monk for anti-Japanese movement was known widely through this report. Hereupon I focused an illumination on what reason Baek Chowol tied with Jinkwansa temple as reorganizing Baek Chowol’s anti-Japanese movement in this paper. I could not describe the connection there was not decisive literature on that on considering link with Jinkwansa temple and Baekchowol so far. But the whole story about the independence movement which was spread out centering around Jinkwansa temple in synthesizing the materials concerned, testimony and situation etc. was reformed owing to circumstances turning out to be kept the materials of Jinkwansa temple excavated by Baek Chowol. Baek Chowol fostered younger students at Jinkwansa temple and sent young man to China with the sinews of war which he collected. And he promoted independence movement in basis on Mapo branch of Jinkwansa temple where was an advance air base for Baek Chowol’s independence movement. Forward Jinkwansa temple was understood as foothold temple for domestic contact headquarters of the whole nation’s independence movement and linked to connection with the Korean Provisional Government in Sanghai, China.
