Abstract
This article deals with a main question, "what has the impact of Eurasian geopolitics been on the Sino-Russian relations?" focusing on three sub-questions: first, what is the origins of the Sino-Russian relations?; second, what kind of geopolitical interests has enabled them to deepen their relationship into 'strategic partnership' through 1990s and establish the 'new treaty' in 2001?; third, what are the prospects for their future relations and the implications on the Northeast Asian security? To approach these questions, this article focuses two geopolitical concepts: 'geostrategic balance' and 'spheres of influence.' Eurasian geopolitics, since 1980, has been a decisive factor to dictate the Sino-Russian relations. Whenever the U.S. and her allies dominated in Eurasian geopolitical configuration, China and Russian had no choice but strengthening their ties to maintain regional geostrategic balance as well as protect their own spheres of influence. Considering the past tendency and the current dynamics of Eurasian geopolitics, which the U.S. has been mustering regional alliances and expanding her military influences throughout the Continent, the Sino-Russian relations will become further deepened, in the foreseeable future, towards 'quasi-alliance' rather than 'convinient alignment.'. Such enhanced Sino-Russian relations will ultimately increase the possibility of tensions and conflicts with the U.S.-Japan-NATO alignment and, thus, bring negative implications on the Northeast Asian security environment and some issues on the Korean peninsula.
