Abstract
This paper examines the effort by Rhee Syngman and Christian Friends of Korea to recognize the provisional government of Korea during the Pacific War. When Pacific War broke out, Rhee organized the Korean Commission and the Korean-American Council to seek approval of the provisional government of Korea from the United States(US) State Department. When this approach did not succeed, he organized the Christian Friends of Korea around American Christians to campaign to the US Congress to recognize the Korean Provisional Government. Per Rhee Syngman’s proposal, Oliver R. Avison formed the Christian Friends of Korea in the fall of 1919. Rhee perceived Christians to be the only group in the US that knew Korea’s situation, and he sought to leverage their support to approach the State’s political sphere, and congress in particular. Avison argued that if US missionaries wanted to be active in Korea again after the war, they should join Rhee in the fighting against Japan and avidly support the recognition of Korean Provisional Government. The Christian Friends of Korea, together with the Korea Commission and the Korean-American Council, submitted crucial petition to the US Senate and House of Representatives to recognize the Provisional Government. In the spring of 1943, the US House of Representatives and the Senate submitted a resolution regarding the official recognition of the Korean Provisional Government. However, this agenda never advanced because of the State Department’s concern that approving the provisional government could create conflicts with England, Soviet Union, and the Allied Powers. Nonetheless, the efforts by the Christian Friends of Korea to recognize the Korean Provisional Government merits attention in Korea’s independence movement history.
