Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of forming the Korean National Association (大韓國民會, DaehanGukminhoe) in North Gando in 1919 and to explore the reasons why Daejonggyo (大倧敎) and Gonggyo (孔敎) withdrew during the organization of the Korean National Association. This paper aims to explore how independence activists in North Gando responded to domestic and international circumstances and organized the Korean National Association. At the end of 1918, President Wilson’s Fourteen Points for Peace were conveyed to North Gando. Independence activists working in the North Gando region selected representatives to be dispatched to the Paris Peace Conference and began preparing for the Declaration of Independence movement, both domestically and internationally at the same time. However, as the Declaration of Independence movement took place first in Korea, new methods had to be found in North Gando. In response, followers of various religions, including Christianity, Daejonggyo, Gonggyo, Cheondogyo (天道敎), and Catholicism (天主敎), established the Joseon Independence Council (朝鮮獨立議事會, JoseonDokribUisahoe) and began leading the Declaration of Independence movement in North Gando and Hamgyeongdo, starting with the Declaration of Independence celebration on March 13, 1919. At the end of March, the Joseon Independence Council was renamed the Joseon Independence Preparatory Association(朝鮮獨立期成會, Joseon- DokribGiseonghoe). When the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was organized and the Provisional Charter was promulgated, the Joseon Independence Preparatory Association was renamed the ‘Korean National Association’ because ‘Joseon’ of the Joseon Independence Association did not match the national name of ‘Korea’. However, unlike the Joseon Independence Council or the Joseon Independence Preparatory Association, which were formed by gathering various religious forces, Daejonggyo and Gonggyo withdrew from the Korean National Association. This withdrawal of Daejonggyo was driven by dissatisfaction with its failure to secure group leadership within the Joseon Independence Preparatory Association. On the other hand, the departure of Gonggyo was not just a problem of failing to take the group leadership. Since Gonggyo had a political orientation against republicanism, Gonggyo decided not to participate in the Korean National Association, which officially supported the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. And the departed Daejonggyo and the Gonggyo united to form a Justice Group(正義團). In this way, the departure of the Gonggyo and Daejonggyo at the time of the formation of the Korean National Association was related to the issue of the independence activists’ choice of independence movement strategies in North Gando during the rapidly changing times. After the departure of Gonggyo and Daejonggyo, the Korean National Association launched an independence movement, including some Catholic and Cheondogyo affiliates, centered on Christian forces. This undermined the foundation for the Korean National Association to become a unified independence movement organization in the North Gando region. In response, the Korean National Association had to constantly work to create a unified independence movement organization in the North Gando region by integrating several independence movement.
