Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Currently, Korean society is suffering from endless competition, confusion, and anxiety. People in this era live busy lives and have no time to reflect on themselves. This paper is based on the lack of spaces for introspection and self-reflection for students on domestic college campuses. It proposes a new meditation space for university campuses that can positively affect students’ self-awareness and self-reflection. (Method) First, this research begins with a theoretical study on meditation as a process by which modern people can step away from their exhausting daily lives and seek inner peace and balance. Then, domestic and overseas examples of meditation spaces where people can meditate by themselves without any instructions from experts or lessons are analyzed. Most meditation spaces form a quiet and closed environment, so that visitors can calm down and take time out for introspection. Through the actions of staring, sitting, and being silent, users are introduced to the world of meditation without realizing it. Second, the research examines the lack of meditation spaces for students at universities, which disregards the social role of universities as the final educational institution before one enters society. Nevertheless, meditation spaces were found in only a very small number of domestic colleges, which shows that there are at least some meditation spaces that actually help students with self-reflection and positive self-awareness. Thus, it became clear that a space for contemplation and reflection on campuses is needed. This paper proposes meditation as a means of contemplation and reflection, and therefore suggests a new design for meditation spaces in unused open areas on campus. (Results) For the application of meditation spaces on university campuses, meditation programs that were induced by natural behaviors according to each characteristic of the meditation space were categorized through previous case studies. In order to apply this, we propose plans for closed/personal meditation spaces, a personal meditation space within a module, a personal meditation space among trees, an open/shared meditation space, a meditation space for meeting above pilotis, and a meditation space for walking in nature. (Conclusions) This paper proposes meditation spaces on campus as a solution to the confusion and anxiety of college students in commercialized university campuses, hoping that the students will find their own balance and tranquility and that these spaces will be discussed and built in practice. We hope that the proposal for meditation spaces in this paper will help college students and modern-day people reflect on themselves and foster self-awareness in the future.
