Abstract
(Background & Purpose) Various attempts have been made in school architecture in several forms in Korea, shifting the perceptions of changing curricula and school spaces. This study presents design directions for the user participatory design of the “School Space Innovation” project through research on the necessity of space improvement, the methods and contents of the user participatory design in the space improvement process, and the result of space design with G. Middle School in Busan, where the “School Autonomous Space Innovation” project was implemented, of the area unit projects of the 2021 “School Space Innovation” project. (Methods) The study’s spatial scope was underused spaces of eight classrooms chosen through a preliminary survey conducted with school members. Users' opinions of the space design were taken into account through briefing sessions in which users, including students, faculty, and parents participated via online surveys, design workshops, insight tours, and design thinking sessions. The preliminary schematic design was prepared through the user participatory design (April 8-June 2, 2021). The working design was implemented (June 3-August 27), and the remodeling work was completed (December 23). (Results) With eight spaces for space innovation, the opinions drawn in the user participatory design process were sorted and reflected in the space design. First, we focused on the art room, the surrounding corridor, and hall on the first floor. The art room was remodeled, the stage was built, a sofa for relaxation was placed, and the corridor design was altered to create space for creative activity. Second, for the parents’ room, colors and materials for a comfortable atmosphere were used to create an open space that could be shared with the community; each room was arranged in a bungalow form, and a cafeteria-like space was created. Third, on the second floor terrace, a high-tempered glass railing was installed for safety so that the underused space could to be utilized as an outdoor sports space; for the corridor, a louver-shaped display stand was installed on one wall while a three-dimensional stand was installed on the other side to enable use as an exhibition space. Fourth, a three-to-five-story home base aimed to create a space for students’ rest and physical activity. A floor mat was constructed, and a bookshelf-type partition wall, a three-dimensional sofa, and a bar counter were installed. (Conclusions) The school’s autonomous space innovation aimed to create a spatial atmosphere to ensure students’ emotional stability from their surroundings, provide spaces for physical activity and stress relief, utilize underused spaces, create diverse and flexible spaces to realize their dreams and talents, and open and share the school space with the community. This project will serve as a model for school space design that actively incorporates user feedback and fulfills the purpose of the “School Space Innovation” project.
