Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Expectations for VR movies are gradually increasing. Among VR movie formats, interactive VR movies are a form in which the viewers can become a component of the movie and intervening in the plot through interaction. This format is particularly attracting consideration attention because it can give more richer experience. However, there is insufficient research on these plot-altering interactions, a key characteristic of interactive VR movies. Therefore, this study analyzes sample of interactive VR movies to classify the types of interactions that affect the plot and studies the characteristics of each type. (Method) First, among the VR movies that have won awards at domestic and international film festivals over the past five years, interactive VR movies in which users are included in the story and interact with it were selected. The selected films won awards at the Sundance Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival, which are prestigious in the field of VR movies. In addition, earlier studies were referenced for classification of the interaction types and examination of the plot development characteristics in each type. The previously analyzed characteristics were verified through case analysis. (Results) Interactions were classified into three types according on whether they influence on the plot progression or contents: engagement, contribution, and exploratory. Engagement interactions influence both the plot progression and its contents, showing successive characteristics that allow events to continue in a sequence and probable characteristics that allows events to be causal and predictable. Contribution interactions only affect plot progression, showing discontinuous characteristics that allow events to exhibit non-continuous and unexpected characteristics that are causal but difficult to predict. Exploratory interactions only affect plot contents, showing continuity characteristics that allow events to be ongoing and accidental characteristics in ways that are acausal and unpredictable. (Conclusions) Engagement interactions make the event including users through the development of linked and probable plots. It allows users to actively appreciate the plot. Contribution interactions make the event proceed by users through the development of discontinuous and unexpected plots. It allows users to immerse themselves in the film, even though the circumstance rapidly changes. Exploratory interactions make the event that users can take the initiative in obtaining information through the development of continuous and accidental plots. It allows users to immerse themselves in the story’s world. Furthermore, it was thought that each interaction type could be used in combination within the film as creator’s intention or needed. However, this study was conducted despite the limited production of interactive VR movies, and therefore future research is needed using additional cases.
