Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Modern public libraries have evolved into a public space that serves as an information center for local communities and is open to users of all ages. They also play the role of a "third place," a common public space for social interaction and enjoyment in urban areas. However, while public libraries in Korea are designed to be facilities that all age groups can freely access, they are often built in areas with poor physical accessibility due to the difficulty of securing a business location in densely populated urban areas. In addition, the commercialization of public facilities has led to a decrease in the utilization and value of public libraries. Therefore, this study aims to explore the design characteristics of sustainable public libraries. (Method) The spatial scope is limited to five public libraries in Sydney, and they are analyzed from the perspective of sustainability in terms of urban and architectural aspects. The research methods include literature and surveys, interviews with local officials, and the use of drawings and photos. (Results) First, all five projects received an excellent evaluation in terms of accessibility. This is due to their direct linkage with parks and commercial facilities in urban areas. In addition, they received a high evaluation in terms of location suitability, which is linked to the reuse of existing facilities or local revitalization projects. Second, environmental aspects received a relatively low evaluation. This can be seen as the analyzed cases emphasize spatial utilization and accessibility rather than sustainable design characteristics of modern public libraries. (Conclusions) This study aimed to derive the design characteristics of sustainable public libraries in Sydney. First, it is a "regionally focused public library," which is not a large-scale single type of library but a medium and small-scale library that is closely related to the local community. Second, it is a "multipurpose space on the first floor" that considers the demands of the local community. Modern public libraries should evolve into a multi-functional space that can accommodate various purposes as the primary function of the library is reduced. Lastly, it is a "user-oriented design" rather than a library-centered design. Through this study, the sustainable design characteristics of Sydney public libraries were derived, and it is expected to be used as a basic data for establishing the basic plan and design direction of public libraries to be built in Korea in the future.
