Abstract
(Background and Purpose) As the importance of respecting human rights and diversity is increasingly emphasized in modern society, Universal Design has emerged as a significant topic, leading to its legislation. At the same time, the advancement of technology is accelerating the development of edutech to spread these values more effectively. In response, a public Universal Design Metaverse Experience Center has been established, necessitating the validation of its value as educational content for the broader public. This study aims to evaluate the learning effectiveness of this experience center as educational content in university settings from a formative perspective. It seeks to expand previous qualitative research by simultaneously analyzing both quantitative and qualitative learning outcomes. (Method) The study focused on the Seoul Universal Design Metaverse Experience Center, with participants being university students enrolled in the 'Theory and Practice of Symbiosis', a social innovation elective course at Y University during the Spring 2024 semester. The research was conducted through the practical education module of 50 minutes within the course. The methodology included a background explanation followed by an exploration of the virtual experience center. Participants evaluated the enjoyment and ease of use, enhancement of understanding of Universal Design, improvement of related skills, and time-efficiency value using a 5-point Likert scale. Additionally, open-ended questions were used to assess learning outcomes, ease of use, interest, and areas for improvement. Quantitative responses were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while qualitative responses were inductively analyzed using content analysis techniques. (Results) The study found that, first, the experience center exhibited high appeal and accessibility as educational content. Second, participants showed improved understanding, evaluation, and practical application of Universal Design, indicating direct learning effectiveness. Third, the exercise positively influenced students' interest in public environments, their habits of connecting with their surroundings, and their critical thinking about the future. Fourth, the overall time-efficiency value was highly recognized, and these findings were confirmed through the students' qualitative responses. Therefore, the Universal Design Experience Center is considered a timely educational tool, especially given the importance of technological advancement and media adaptation. (Conclusions) In conclusion, the exploration of this experience center as educational content enabled broad and in-depth learning within a limited time, significantly enhancing both quantitative and qualitative learning outcomes, and strongly supporting previous research findings. This study serves as a milestone for the development of educational content and programs that enable a multidimensional understanding of Universal Design in a rapidly changing modern society. It also demonstrates the potential of public-developed experience centers to be effectively utilized as educational modules in academic settings.
