Abstract

(Background and Purpose) With concerns about climate change and environmental pollution, exhibition pavilions are increasingly reflecting the spirit of the times by integrating ecofriendly spatial designs. This study aimed to provide a symbolic representation of such spaces and examine the unique spatial attributes of pavilions that align with eco-friendly themes. (Method) The scope of this research is confined to the study of exhibition pavilions constructed in the context of heightened global awareness of the environment following the 2015 Paris Agreement, the first-ever worldwide agreement of its kind. Specifically, the focus was narrowed to cases where the characteristics of an eco-friendly spatial design were evident. The present study was conducted in accordance with these guidelines. First, by drawing on the characteristics of both the exhibition pavilion and the eco-friendly spatial design, the attributes of an eco-friendly spatial design specific to the exhibition pavilion were derived. Second, we conducted a case analysis based on the derived aspects of sociality, experientiality, and formative characteristics. The cases were selected according to a standard that emphasizes a comprehensive eco-friendly design experience rather than merely the eco-friendliness of the materials used to form experiential and social relationships. Third, for a detailed analysis of the various eco-friendly materials, the materials were categorized into plastic, wood, and innovative materials, with a comparative assessment of their advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, by examining these cases, we analyzed how each component contributed to positive perceptions among viewers. (Results) The integration of eco-friendly materials into exhibition pavilions, while noteworthy, did not significantly change the visitors' perceptions of their environment. More impactful were the new relationships and connections formed through the direct experiences and interactions that visitors had with these spaces. These engagements fostered a profound sense of solidarity with the environment, acting as a pivotal factor in altering perceptions beyond what is merely visible within the exhibition space. Such findings appear as a compelling proposal, suggesting that the future of eco-friendly spatial design can present an innovative alternative. As evidenced by the pavilions that have incorporated these eco-friendly elements, the presentation of such future spaces unequivocally demonstrates that eco-friendly spatial design has innovative and novel potential in the realm of environmental preservation. (Conclusions) This study underscores the need to move beyond mere material eco-friendliness. By emphasizing the social, formative, and experiential factors, we can highlight the value of eco-friendly design and motivate visitors toward the urgency of its adoption. Embracing eco-friendly spatial designs is imperative in our current era. However, this study is limited to six case samples of eco-friendly spatial designs in exhibition pavilions. In the future, we aspire to systematically and quantitatively analyze a broader array of cases, paving the way for further refinement in the field.
