Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Against the background of modern urbanization and serious environmental problems, many countries consider 'Eco-Friendly Green Schools' as one of the measures to improve the educational environment. The Eco-Friendly Green Schools introduce natural and sustainable elements into school design and management to provide an environmental education necessary for students' emotional development and personality education and provide opportunities for urban students to learn in a natural environment. Also, social ecologist Stephen R. Kellert said that biophilic design, which can form an intimate exchange with nature, has 'the potential to transform schools'. Studies have shown that learning in a natural setting can help relieve stress, restore attention, and improve academic performance. Biophilic design creates an environment where people can interact with nature through direct, indirect, and spatial experiences. Therefore, this study aims to propose a method of creating a sustainable learning environment that promotes the healthy development of students by analyzing the spatial characteristics of Eco-Friendly Green Schools established after 2000 where biophilic design is applied. (Method) As for the research method, first, a theoretical review was conducted on the strategic goals & spatial characteristics of Eco-Friendly Green Schools, and the background & elements of biophilic design. Second, types of Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green Schools were derived by analyzing the relationship between the spatial characteristics of the Eco-Friendly Green Schools and the biophilic design. Then, by analyzing the cases of overseas educational facilities that implemented biophilic design, specific characteristics and elements of Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green Schools were derived. Next, analysis models and examples were presented. Third, to verify the applicability of biophilic design in Eco-Friendly Green Schools, the cases of five educational facilities that won the Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award were analyzed. Finally, the results were comprehensively analyzed to conclude. (Results) The spatial characteristics of the Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green Schools revealed the ecological resilience and adaptability to the climatic environment in the spatial characteristics of the functional Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green School type. In the spatial characteristics of the psychological Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green School type, multisensory stimulation and emotional induction were found. In the spatial characteristics of the structural Biophilic Eco-Friendly Green School type, the permeability of the organic form and the mediation of the spatial experience were revealed. (Conclusions) In conclusion of the study, biophilic design is an important means to achieve the goal of building Eco-Friendly Green Schools by creating a healthy and sustainable learning environment through natural experiences. The application of biophilic design in Eco-Friendly Green Schools can be judged to have important educational and ecological values.
