Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Individuals with multiple severe impairments have difficulties learning, which reduces their independence and leads to complex challenges. Hence, this study aims to develop symbols to distinguish objects and provide a foundation for independent living. (Methods) To understand people with severe and multiple visual impairments, we review the literature on moderate and multiple visual impairments and investigate previous studies on symbols. Then, based on the derived implications, the design is set through an expert workshop, and symbol design is carried out. A symbol prototype is created to verify the design, and an impairment expert has confirmed its effectiveness. Finally, the research results are summarized, and future research directions are presented. (Results) The four directions for symbol design are the classification of objects in spaces shared by various members, the division of spaces within a house, the division of identical quarters within a space, and the division of individually designated objects. Then, prototypes of 71 designed symbols are produced, and experts with impairment have evaluated their utility. We contend that the differences in shape at the silhouette level should be used considering the low learning level of people with multiple severe impairments. Considering the characteristics of impairments, symbols should be used effectively against external forces. A durable material that is less irritating to one’s hand must be used. In addition, the size of the symbol varies depending on the object to which it is attached and the user's physical condition. Finally, diversity in how symbols are attached and detached is required because symbols are used as landmarks for various objects or spaces.(Conclusion) This study aims to develop symbols for objects that people with severe or multiple visual impairments can distinguish. This study addresses situations previously discarded by research or the development of symbolic design. Hence, its results can serve as the basis for future symbolic research. Future studies should conduct a usability evaluation of people with severe and multiple visual impairments to examine usability on actual users. We also plan to produce a prototype of an improved symbol based on the improvements derived from expert and usability evaluations. Hopefully, our findings may be used for developing symbols for people with severe and multiple visual impairments.
