Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Museums, as globally significant cultural and educational venues, provide opportunities for in-depth learning and rich cultural experiences. Children's museums, in particular, focused on educational goals, are seeing an increasing demand. However, current research on these specialized institutions is relatively sparse. Hence, this study aims to delve into the topological relationship and spatial hierarchy of children's museums in China to thoroughly explore their spatial characteristics, providing foundational data to facilitate ease of movement and visitation within these museums. (Method) Utilizing spatial syntax, this research analyzes the relationships between various components within the interior spaces of medium and large national and public children's museums in China, employing justified graphs and spatial hierarchy analysis. Additionally, it conducts predictive analyses on children's spatial recognition and accessibility based on these findings. (Results) The study yields the following results: Firstly, an analysis of topological relationship types shows that shallow-ring structures are most prevalent, which are more suitable for children with lower cognitive abilities and contribute to their social skill development. Secondly, results from the spatial hierarchy analysis demonstrate that experiential display spaces and public areas occupy central roles within the overall spatial arrangement. However, analysis of the spatial structure's intelligibility indicates that children face challenges in obtaining sufficient information while navigating the routes, leading to difficulties in accurately identifying spaces. Based on these insights, several recommendations are put forward: Firstly, enhancing the recognizability and accessibility of experiential display and public spaces could significantly improve children's visiting experience. Secondly, it is advised to increase both the physical and visual connectivity between individual spaces, aiding children in more effortlessly gathering information as they navigate. Lastly, optimizing children's viewing routes and minimizing factors that may create visual obstructions will make it easier for children to move around. (Conclusions) The conclusions and recommendations offer valuable guidance for the future spatial design and planning of children's museums. It is important to note the limitations of the research method, with future studies planned to include the examination of spatial profiles for a more comprehensive understanding of spatial characteristics.
