Abstract
(Background and Purpose) With economic and technological advances and a growing societal focus on children, playground design is gaining importance. As a result, the forms of children's play spaces are becoming increasingly diverse. However, it is found that despite the abundance and diversity of playgrounds, children's playgrounds are still bound to a fixed pattern. Playgrounds are mostly composed of high-frequency play equipment, such as swings, slides, caves, sandboxes, and jungle gyms. Designers design play spaces with these stylistically fixed components. This means that designers are repeating familiar forms without research for the users of play spaces. In the current design field, there is little exploration of the nature of play in developmental children. The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between the characteristics of primitive hunter-gatherer children's activities and the forms of modern play space through analysis. (Method) Firstly, this paper summarized the activity characteristics of play as a process of developing survival skills in 0-12-year-old developing children in primitive hunter-gatherer civilizations. Secondly, by combining the social status of the Industrial Revolution, this study summarized the transformation process of children's play spaces into three stages which include predecessor, establishment, and development. On the one hand, the forms of play spaces created in each period are analyzed to derive common characteristics of the spaces. On the other hand, authors collected a lot of design projects of contemporary play spaces in various regions. And the common characteristics of the spaces are summarized. Finally, the spatial characteristics of modern play spaces are compared with the characteristics of children's activities during the development of primitive humans to find the relationship between them. (Result) Through the research, we found that the characteristics of modern play spaces are consistent with the characteristics of hunter-gatherer children's development activities. Their activities are characterized by six main features: climbing, viewing, exploring, adventuring, constructing space, and promoting social interaction. That is, climbable, prospectable, explorable, adventurous, constructable, and pro-social. These characteristics have persisted as the nature of play from the hunter-gatherer period to the present. (Conclusion) This study summarized the development process of the spatial structure of modern playgrounds through the evolutionary psychology perspective. We further explored the relationship between the developmental activities of primitive children and the structure of modern play spaces. Through this study, it is expected to find the evolutionary structure of the play space and provide a reference for further academic research and design direction
