Abstract

Children are keen observers of the surroundings and they can actively express their play space preferences. The purpose of the present study was to advance our understandings of the children’s affordances of neighborhood outdoor play environments and to explore children's play space preferences. We conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 4 to 5-year-old children in A-gu, Seoul. We modified and used the affordances taxinomy and interview procedures developed by Kyttä(2002). As for play space preferences, semi-structured interview questions were developed based on the literature and after consulting with two architecture professionals. The major findings are as follows. First, “not perceived affordances” at high rates were ‘water’, ‘holes/tunnels’, ‘non-rigid, attached object’, ‘relatively smooth slopes’, and ‘dirt/sand’. Second, there was little difference in children’s play space preferences; however, children showed relatively high preferences for 'vertical spatial arrangement' over ‘horizontal arrangement’ and ‘challenging structure' over ’safe structure’. Based on the findings, we suggested that local community administrators need to assign greater efforts to provide young children with rich outdoor play environments while also considering the affordances that are not well identified by the children in the community. This study also discussed the necessity to actively consider childrens' perspectives when designing play spaces and facilities for them.
