Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In the process of rapid urbanization in China, the walking environment plays an important role in urban planning and sustainable development. Increasing the walking affinity of a city contributes to improving social fairness and the quality of urban life, increasing the intention of residents to walk and their likelihood of accessing social and economic opportunities, thereby promoting publicity. This study explores the correlation between urban economic change and walking environment affinity and presents urban planning suggestions to promote the development of a walking environment and economic balance. (Method) The research method began by analyzing pedestrian environment friendliness reports, selecting major cities, and collecting related data. Second, we explored the correlation between pedestrian friendliness and the urban economy through factor analysis. Additionally, major factors in the data were identified and structural relationships between the variables were revealed. Third, cluster analysis was used to cluster cities and identify clear characteristics of each cluster to understand the internal structure and rules of the data. Finally, by combining the results of these two statistical methods, practical suggestions for improving pedestrian environments and urban planning were presented. (Results) Factor analysis provides important insights for urban planners and shows the importance of investing in the walking environment and infrastructure for economic and population growth. These investments not only improve the quality of life of cities but also reflect the complex interaction between regional economic development and population density changes. Cluster analysis indicates that cities in the first cluster require more investment in infrastructure and public services, thereby improving the residential environment. Cities in the second cluster should optimize their current resource allocation and maintain a high level of walking affinity. Cities in the third cluster can find a balance between economic development and public service improvement by referring to the experiences of Cluster 1. (Conclusions) This study explored the correlation between economic change and pedestrian environment friendliness in Chinese cities. The results showed that, as the level of economic development of the city improved, the quality of the pedestrian environment also improved. This may be because economic prosperity stimulates investments in urban infrastructure and improves the overall quality of urban pedestrian environments, including improvements in pedestrian paths, parks, and public spaces. These findings provide important insights for urban planners and highlight the need to consider economic and demographic factors when designing measures to improve pedestrian environments. Future urban planning and policy enactment should focus on these factors and promote the harmonious coexistence of pedestrian environments and urban development.
