Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In the modern era, where complex structures are formed from diverse perspectives, Sou Fujimoto focuses on discovering a harmonious way to integrate these elements rather than perceiving them as contradictions. This study aims to explore the characteristics of organic order through the attributes of part architecture in his works and to propose that the close interrelationship of spatial components can serve as a method for establishing organic order in architecture. To achieve this, the essence of organic order is examined, and its correlation with part architecture is analyzed to identify an architectural coordinate system that can realize organic order in contemporary society. (Method) This study seeks to analyze the concept of organic order, which is utilized across various disciplines, by closely integrating it with the spatial domain. To establish a theoretical background, a general review is conducted on the concepts and characteristics of part architecture and organic order as presented by Fujimoto. Subsequently, the expression of organic order within part architecture is examined to secure and analyze the correlation between these two concepts. The findings from this analysis are then applied to case studies to objectively demonstrate the manifestation of organic order in the part architecture of Sou Fujimoto’s works. The scope of case analysis is based on the concept of part architecture in Fujimoto’s works, with architectural examples that exhibit organic order being categorized into distinct types. (Results) The results of the analysis are divided into three types. Relational order is characterized by non-hierarchy, porosity, and localized relationships that emerge through the interconnection of fine parts. Structural order reflects the fluidity of spatial concepts through relationships between particles, where the interconnections between parts alone generate an infinite space. It appears as a coexistence of chaos and order and possesses interconnected characteristics. Lastly, generative order can also be reinterpreted as spatialized relationality, meaning that when the combination of parts forms a whole, it results in an undifferentiated architecture that achieves wholeness through structural relationships. (Conclusion) In contemporary space, which expands infinitely in various ways, there is a need for a new conceptual reorganization and understanding of organic order—one that accommodates change while maintaining an intrinsic and fundamental order. The establishment of organic order through part architecture, as explored in this study, is proposed as one analytical framework that can be suggested in various ways. It is expected to serve as a foundation for research on the composition and perception of organic space by analyzing the effects of each detailed attribute.
