Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The luxury hotel industry is shifting toward a customer experience-centered paradigm, and as brand competition intensifies, hotels are increasingly required to establish their identity as destinations. Within this context, hotel food and beverage (F&B) spaces are becoming “destinationized,” evolving beyond traditional service functions into cultural and social hubs that shape how guests perceive and interact with the brand. While previous studies have affirmed the positive impact of F&B spaces on customer experience and brand image, there remains limited discussion on their concrete implementation as space branding strategies within the context of luxury hospitality. Therefore, this study aims to explore how space branding strategies are applied in luxury hotel F&B spaces and to identify their defining characteristics that differentiate them from general commercial spaces. (Method) To derive these characteristics, this study extracted four key components of customer experience and three core dimensions of space branding from prior literature. These were integrated and restructured into six experience-based space branding factors: spatial expression (extraordinary experience, cognitive experience), emotional content (sensory experience, emotional experience), and relational elements (participatory experience, cultural experience). Based on this analytical framework, a qualitative case study analysis was conducted on selected luxury hotel F&B spaces that reflect diverse brand identities and regional contexts. The study compared how space branding was implemented in each case and conceptualized the emerging characteristics through cross-case synthesis. (Results) The analysis confirmed that luxury hotel F&B spaces function as strategic environments that enhance sensory immersion and effectively communicate the brand’s values, story, and philosophy. From the case analysis, five strategic characteristics were identified: exclusive rarity, symbolic identity, localized immersion, cultural fantasy, and playful relationality. These characteristics were not found to operate independently; instead, they interact organically to deepen customers’ emotional and meaningful engagement with the brand. When these factors are aligned with the hotel’s core identity, they offer a distinctive and memorable experience that drives satisfaction and loyalty. (Conclusions) This study empirically demonstrates that F&B spaces serve as essential platforms for brand expression and customer engagement in luxury hotels. It contributes to the academic understanding of space branding by contextualizing it within experiential hospitality design, and offers practical insights for spatial planning and brand strategy in hotel management. Furthermore, this study highlights the necessity of designing F&B spaces that embody and communicate brand narratives and values, and recommends future research employing quantitative methods and broader case comparisons to further validate and expand upon these findings.
