Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Modern cities and local communities are confronted with complex issues such as super-aging, population decline, urban deterioration, and community disintegration. These challenges have intensified regional imbalances and social fragmentation, highlighting the need to restore community foundations. Particularly at the village level, community recovery cannot be achieved solely by improving the physical environment; it requires building a social foundation that integrates emotional bonds, resident interactions, and self-governance. In this context, this study aimed to develop a design process for village community formation based on the concept and practical structure of social innovation design and to assess its effectiveness and validity by applying it to domestic cases. (Method) This study reviewed the relevant literature to establish the theoretical basis of social innovation design, focusing on Manzini’s theories. An analytical framework was constructed, comprising three stages: context exploration, spatial identity building, and enhancement of social value. The evaluation factors were identified and structured through focus group interviews, leading to the development of a practical action-oriented analytical tool for application in community-building cases. The spatial scope of the analysis was defined by residents’ everyday living areas at the village level, rather than by administrative boundaries, and the temporal scope was limited to domestic cases since the adoption of the sustainable development goals in 2015. (Results) The developed framework comprehensively considered various elements, including physical space, resident participation structures, and community management methods. The framework was applied to four domestic cases: Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Yonsei-ro in Changcheon-dong (Seoul), Sewing Street in Changsin-dong (Jongno-gu, Seoul), and Balsan Village in Gwangju. The evaluation demonstrated that social innovation design was an effective approach for community formation as it created facilities, restored social networks through active resident participation, and strengthened publicness and sustainability. In each case, design interventions contributed to physical improvement, facilitated the formation of community identity, built social trust, and established autonomous management systems. (Conclusions) This study redefines village communities as “social places,” rather than mere physical spaces, centered on resident participation and interaction. It demonstrates that social innovation design functions as a strategic and practical tool for realizing this concept. Design acts as a facilitator that organically connects contextual problem interpretation, empathy building, implementation-based planning, and value creation. These findings highlight the potential for integrated applications in diverse fields such as place-based urban regeneration, public policy, and community design. By presenting the theoretical foundation and practical expansion of design for solving social problems, this study provides a crucial model for sustainable community development, with significant academic and policy implications.
