Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The architectural environment is undergoing significant changes owing to the climate crisis, an aging population, and a shortage of on-site labor. These changes are driving a shift in construction methods, increasing the interest in approaches that reduce on-site construction and relocate production processes to factories. Timber-based modular construction has been highlighted as a method with promising potential in various aspects, such as reducing material use, shortening construction periods, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to examine the conditions and trends surrounding timber modular construction in Korea and based on these, to derive strategies for activating the industry moving forward. (Method) Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five experts in the fields of architecture, technology, and institutional policy based on seven questions. The responses to each question were organized by grouping similar or recurring opinions, and the content was categorized into four areas: current state of the industry, feasibility of using domestically produced timber, consumer perceptions and related obstacles, and key directions for future industrial activation. Each category was structured around the experts’ views, accompanied by the researcher’s interpretations and judgments. (Results) The experts shared a common perception that there are still few cases of modular timber construction in Korea and that the industry remains in an early stage. In terms of materials, although there are some institutional incentives for using domestic timber, several experts have noted that practical application remains limited owing to issues such as unstable quality and a lack of standardized specifications. Regarding consumer perception, concerns about the structural reliability of timber and low trust in modular construction persist, making expansion difficult for the industry. Technical and institutional foundations such as structural standards, certification processes, and construction technologies were also frequently cited by experts as important issues to address. Furthermore, the experts emphasized that activating the industry would require a combination of public-led pilot projects, improved consumer awareness, and the establishment of technical standards and material systematization. (Conclusions) These findings indicate that while it is evident that various conditions must be met to support industry expansion, improving consumer perception should be prioritized. Public institutions must take the lead in promoting the characteristics and advantages of modular timber construction and guiding public perception changes through reliable real-world cases to reduce existing misunderstandings and negative biases.
