Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Virtual Reality (VR) is a medium that induces strong affective responses in users through immersion and sensory stimulation compared to other media. However, previous studies have mostly focused on implementation aspects such as technological completeness or presence, and despite technological advancement, research considering user characteristics, especially the differences between adolescents and adults, remains relatively insufficient. Adolescents and adults show different cognitive and emotional responses due to differences in brain maturation, leading to different interpretations of experiences. Such differentiation underscores the need to design age-appropriate experiential environments. From this perspective, this study aims to demonstrate the necessity of experience structures and environment provisioning based on developmental characteristics by comparing and analyzing differences in interpretation between adolescents and adults exposed to identical VR experiences, grounded in Appraisal Theory, across five appraisal elements: novelty, goal congruence, controllability, causal attribution, and social evaluation. (Method) This study organized theoretical discussions on the developmental characteristics and emotions of adolescents and adults, explored differences in appraisal between the two groups, and then conducted a structured VR content analysis. Twenty popular titles from the Steam and Meta platforms were selected as analysis targets. Scenes corresponding to the five elements—novelty, goal congruence, controllability, causal attribution, and social evaluation—were extracted, and appraisal interpretations based on developmental characteristics were compared between adolescents and adults. (Results) The analysis indicates that adolescents, compared to adults, more frequently produced exaggerated appraisals in situations involving prediction failure, social evaluation, and loss of control. Their emotional responses were greater in amplitude and persistence, and they showed immaturity in contextual reappraisal and self-regulation. In contrast, adults tended to interpret the same experiences and situations strategically, transforming failures into learning opportunities and shifting them into long-term strategies. These differences likely influence mechanisms of operation and immersion in VR experiences, as well as post-experiential effects , and suggesting that the two cohorts possess different interpretive frameworks. (Conclusions) In conclusion, this study confirmed that even under identical stimuli and contexts, adolescents and adults arrive at different experiential interpretations by integrating Appraisal Theory and developmental neuroscience in the context of VR. This finding implies the need for environments tailored to each user, particularly customized stimulus structures and contextual provisions for adolescents and adults as dichotomous groups distinguishable by differing neural maturation. The study provides a foundational perspective not only on technological sophistication but also on the necessity of environment design based on developmental characteristics. Although this research is limited by its tendency-oriented interpretations and comparative case design, it nonetheless foregrounds the need for and perspective on differentiated experience structures based on developmental characteristics, which have been rarely been addressed in prior studies.
