Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Since the emergence of the modern concept of the office, the structure and form of workspaces have continuously evolved with response to industrial development and shifts in work behaviors. This study aims to articulate design directions for office environments that foster creativity and collaboration—core competencies in the knowledge-information industry. (Method) The Googleplex, selected as a case because it exemplifies a campus-like office complex. Whereas information on the spatial planning and design of workplaces in other major firms such as Apple and Meta remain undisclosed, Google’s records of its planning and design process are publicly available, rendering it an appropriate case for analysis. The literature review examines previous research on the evolution of office structures in relation to industrial paradigm shifts and identifies spatial elements that influence creativity. The case study focuses on the Googleplex as an early, exemplar of an office environment with in the knowledge-information industry designed around theories of creative collaboration. (Results) Early office spaces were characterized by militarily regimented desk arrays and supervisory rooms. Following Taylor’s scientific management, layouts shifted toward centralized, efficiency-oriented configurations. Standardized “cell” units in high-rise buildings reinforced uniformity, while the later emergence of open-plan offices emphasized interaction and communication, encouraging more organic and flexible movement. As industries transitioned toward the knowledge-information era, creativity based on variability and serendipity became essential. Collective creativity—arising through communication and information sharing—gained prominence alongside individual creativity. Studies of innovative workplaces confirm that greater opportunities for informal encounters and catalyze creative thinking and innovation. Dot-com companies pursued creative environments modeled on university campuses, integrating cultures of autonomy, communication, and collaboration into office design. Consequently, workplaces in the knowledge-information industry have adopted open-plan layouts that promote chance encounters, spatial compositions that blur work and leisure, home-like comfort, small-city-like organization, and focused individual zones. The Googleplex exemplifies these principles, being designed as a vibrant, campus-like “office-scape” that encourages spontaneous interaction. It highlights informal social spaces such as cafés, gyms, and restaurants to support creativity and collaboration. (Conclusions) In the knowledge-information industry, competitiveness is driven by ideas and creativity, and thus the design of office spaces should incorporate the following elements. First, a spatial structure that facilitates accidental encounters and interactions among members. Second, differentiated spaces for play and relaxation beyond task work , supporting diverse behavioral patterns. Third, an organically organized layout that balances areas for focused work with those for creative collaboration, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and creative capacity within the workspace.
