Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The design paradigm of the 21st century extends beyond functionality and aesthetics, aiming to guarantee participation and experiences for diverse users. Nevertheless, although 16% of the global population lives with disabilities, accessibility in immersive industries such as the metaverse, VR, and AR remains insufficient. While various attempts have been made to address the needs of individuals with visual, auditory, and developmental disabilities, most initiatives are still confined to single disability groups or individual projects. Accordingly, this study conducts comprehensive analysis immersive-content cases across disability categories grounded in inclusive-design principles, derives the associated characteristics and design elements, and presents foundational evidence for inform inclusive design. (Method) The study focuses on individuals with visual, auditory, and developmental disabilities. The research targets immersive content developed and operated since 2020 that applies inclusive design elements. Immersive content has been actively utilized in fields such as education, rehabilitation, and cultural experience, offering significant potential to expand accessibility and participation opportunities for people with disabilities. Representative cases were selected for analysis, and each project’s content and characteristics were examined to extract inclusive design elements. Furthermore, based on experiential features, the study systematically analyzed strengths, limitations, and areas requiring improvement. (Results) The analysis revealed distinct characteristics by disability type. For individuals with visual impairments, auditory and tactile substitution technologies facilitated spatial understanding and participation, though certain interfaces still depended on vision-centered structures, limiting immersion. For users with hearing-impairments, accessibility was enhanced through real-time captions, avatar-based sign language translation, and visual alert systems, but participation was still restricted in experiences designed primarily around sound. For those with developmental disabilities, repetitive learning, intuitive interfaces, and difficulty-adjustment functions promoted engagement and educational benefits, though long-term design strategies and clinical validation were insufficient. Synthesizing these findings, the study identifies sensory substitution, interactivity, learning and experiential immersion, and social inclusion as key factors in inclusive immersive content design. (Conclusions) Through an inclusive design perspective, this study analyzed immersive content cases by disability type, thereby addressing limitations of prior research. The findings confirm that immersive content holds the potential to make meaningful contributions to education, rehabilitation, and social participation for people with disabilities. However, current examples still tend to be technology-driven or narrowly focused on single disability cohorts, limiting broader inclusivity. Future research and practice should emphasize multisensory design, participatory development involving users, and the establishment of international accessibility standards. By advancing in these directions, immersive content can evolve beyond assistive tooling to a core medium that enables autonomous experiences and fosters social inclusion for people with disabilities.
