Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The domestic construction industry is experiencing a decline in productivity and efficiency due to aging and a deepening labor shortage, and the rate of industrial accidents remains high. According to the Korea Construction Industry Research Institute in 2024, the average age of construction technicians has increased by about 13 years over 20 years, rapidly aging. Accordingly, the introduction of construction robots is attracting attention, and at CES 2025, artificial intelligence and IoT-based construction robots were evaluated as future core technologies. Construction robots improve work efficiency and safety and enable precise construction. This study analyzes trends in construction robot technology, suggests the necessity of introduction and application methods through case studies, and seeks effective introduction strategies using SWOT analysis and TOWS matrix. (Method) First, we set‘construction robots’and ‘construction automation’as keywords to review prior research, and selected six highly relevant academic papers published between 2020 and 2024 to analyze the technological development process, domestic and international trends, and policy support status. Second, we evaluated 12 cases from 2018 to 2024 to assess application methods, robot types, and the technological characteristics of equipment by construction process, thereby identifying the latest technological trends. Lastly, we assessed the competitiveness of construction robots using SWOT analysis and the TOWS matrix, and developed strategic response measures. Through this analysis, we examined economic feasibility and proposed an efficient implementation plan for robot technology in the construction industry. (Results) AI-based technology and sensor integration enhance precision, while articulated and mobile robots are utilized for a variety of tasks. A SWOT analysis was conducted, followed by the application of the TOWS matrix to formulate strategies for adoption and expansion. The SO, WO, ST, and WT strategies focus on leveraging technological strengths, minimizing initial costs, addressing legal and regulatory challenges, and ensuring ongoing research and development. (Conclusions) First, in order to solve the problems of decreased productivity, decreased skilled labor, and increased industrial accident rates, construction robots should be integrated with autonomous driving, cloud, and sensor technologies to promote process automation. Second, the return on investment (ROI) should be maximized by enhancing legal and institutional frameworks, providing financial support, establishing standardization and safety regulations, offering bonus points for public contracts, and reducing taxes. Third, the expansion of technology education and field-centered training is essential to prepare for the decline in simple tasks and the growing demand for specialized labor. Lastly, research and development (R&D) and technology commercialization should be enhanced through collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions. Additionally, a long-term strategy connected to smart construction should be established. Future research should focus on developing optimal adoption strategies by utilizing economic analysis, enhancing human-robot collaboration, and implementing empirical applications.
