Abstract
(Background and Purpose) In recent years, music festivals have evolved beyond traditional stage-centered performances into immersive environments that prioritize spatial and sensory experiences. Elements such as lighting, sound, and structural installations serve not merely as atmospheric tools but as strategic components that guide emotional responses and shape the rhythm of audience engagement. These sensory elements are no longer independent but operate within interactive systems, forming a unified narrative flow. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze how core sensory factors and spatial structures in music festival environments function to induce immersion, and to establish a design criteria framework that is applicable in practical spatial planning. (Method) The study employed a four-stage analysis model. First, theoretical research was conducted to identify key characteristics of immersion, relevant sensory elements, and the mechanism of spatial interaction. Second, a structured analysis framework was developed to guide case analysis. Third, six domestic and international examples of immersive festivals and exhibitions were selected for comparative analysis. These cases were analyzed both qualitatively, to understand sensory compositions and spatial flows, and quantitatively, through a five-point Likert scale. The quantitative evaluation measured perceived strength across four dimensions: sensory integration, emotional inducement, circulation linkage, and participatory engagement. This mixed-method approach enabled a multilayered interpretation of each design component. (Results) Six design elements were derived from the analysis: lighting, sound, structure, circulation, emotional narrative, and spatial context. These components were found to work not as isolated stimuli but as integrative agents within a flow-based system. Immersion was achieved when sensory elements were interlinked with emotional rhythm and user movement. For instance, strategic combinations of sound and lighting reinforced emotional engagement, while spatial layouts guided user experience in a sequential and narrative-driven manner. The Likert-based evaluation further validated the differential impact of each component across the analyzed cases, revealing varying levels of immersion intensity shaped by design coherence and sensory orchestration. (Conclusions) The study presents a multilayered interpretation of how immersive environments in music festivals are structured, emphasizing the interrelationship between sensory design and emotional flow. A set of integrated design criteria was proposed, offering a practical framework applicable to other immersive environments, such as performance spaces, brand experiences, and public cultural venues. The findings underscore that immersive design is not about maximizing stimuli, but about sequencing and coordinating sensory and emotional experiences across time and space. Furthermore, the proposed analytical framework and design criteria can serve as a foundation for future research involving field experiments, focus group interviews (FGI), experiential surveys, or biometric measurements to enhance the empirical applicability and precision of immersive design strategies.
