Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The advent of technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution has given rise to an increased interest in the variable application of display panels within the domain of spatial design. Displays are emerging as key media, transitioning from static spatial components to dynamic tools for experiential exhibitions, immersive event environments, and representations of diverse lifestyles. This research study provides a comprehensive analysis of the influence and application methods of OLED-based display panels on spatial design. It aims to propose practical strategies to enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and quality of user experiences within spaces. Additionally, the study seeks to identify the interrelationship among displays, users, and spaces to explore future-oriented application possibilities. (Method) This study selected four recently implemented OLED display cases from large-scale cultural public spaces both in Korea and abroad. Through analysis, this research investigates the current implementations and explores strategic directions for the future application of variable display panels in spatial design. The data collection involved web and literature research, alongside on-site visits, to classify the physical, content, spatial, and interactive characteristics of displays. Four key dimensions of variability factors (Formal Variability, Content Flexibility, Spatial Integration, Interactivity) and additional evaluation axes (three experiential-Sensory Experience, Spatial Immersion, Brand Communication & two sustainability factors-Technological Sustainability, Socio-Cultural Sustainability) were derived from previous studies. These nine factors were subsequently subdivided into 45 detailed evaluation criteria, quantified using weighted methods (40%~8%) and analyzed across six rating levels. (Results) The analysis of the four cases revealed that the adaptive use of display panels significantly broadened spatial concepts, enhanced morphological flexibility through curved and modular structures, and improved spatial integration through architectural integration. Interactive and multi-sensory elements (such as sound, touch, and scent) beyond mere visual stimulation significantly increased user immersion and stay duration, demonstrating a revolutionary improvement in user experience. Display panels are evolving into core spatial elements rather than supplementary components. However, improvements were identified in sustainability aspects, including energy efficiency, recycling, eco-friendliness, and connections with local culture and community. (Conclusions) OLED-based variable displays in spatial design are evolving into essential media that define the identity and function of spaces. As emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, and XR continue to evolve, the feasibility of adaptive and personalized spatial environments is anticipated to increase. Technological advancements in large-scale flexible displays are expected to enable tailored designs optimized for specific spatial characteristics. Key challenges for future development include ensuring sustainability, advancing user-centered design approaches, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration ecosystems. Based on the findings, future studies should entail empirical analyses across diverse spatial types based on their purpose and function, long-term user behavior monitoring, development of quantitative evaluation methodologies, and design strategies for the next generation of variable display-integrated spatial environments.
