초록

(Background and Purpose) As the fashion industry shifts towards sustainability, bio-based innovative fibers have emerged as pivotal solutions for mitigating environmental impact. These fibers are derived from renewable sources such as mushrooms, plants, and synthetic proteins, providing environmentally friendly substitutes to traditional materials like animal leather and synthetic fabrics. This study explores the application of bio-based fibers in fashion, analyzing their advantages, limitations, and commercial potential. (Method) This study employed qualitative research methods to investigate the integration of bio-based materials into designs by five representative brands: Stella McCartney,Hermes, Nike, PANGAIA, and Yuima Nakazato—integrated bio-based materials into their designs. Through case studies and comparative analysis, this study evaluates how these brands apply innovative textiles to balance sustainability, functionality, and market demand. The study categorizes bio-based fibers into three main fashion domains: luxury fashion, where aesthetic appeal and exclusivity propel adoption; sports clothing, where durability, and performance are crucial; and experimental fashion, where innovation, and materials science transcend boundaries. (Results) The findings of this study demonstrate that bio-based fibers offer notable environmental benefits, particularly in terms of reduced carbon emissions and improved biodegradability when compared to conventional textiles. Nevertheless, their widespread adoption remains constrained due to several critical challenges. Chief among these challenges are high production costs and insufficient material durability, which collectively hinder scalability and long-term performance in commercial applications. Moreover, the relatively low level of market commercialization has contributed to a lack of public awareness and understanding regarding the properties and potential of bio-based fibers, thereby impeding broader market penetration. Addressing these barriers will require sustained technological innovation, investment in infrastructure, and the development of a more robust supply chain. Additionally, the aesthetic limitations of certain bio-based textiles restrict their applicability in luxury fashion, where design precision and material sophistication are paramount. The study further highlights sectoral disparities in adaptability, with sportswear and experimental fashion demonstrating higher levels of integration and innovation potential than the more conservative luxury segment. (Conclusions) This study corroborates the notion that bio-based fibers will play a pivotal role in the future of sustainable fashion. These fibers are evolving from experimental innovation to large-scale production and commercialization, representing not merely a material substitution but a fundamental transformation in how brands create value and cultivate consumer trust centered on sustainability. Nevertheless, realizing this transition to a sustainable fashion market necessitates the successful navigation of several challenges. These include the reduction of production costs, the enhancement of material performance, and the improvement of aesthetic versatility to satisfy diverse design requirements. Addressing these challenges demands coordinated efforts among the fashion brands, biotech companies, and research institutions, alongside supportive policies and increased consumer awareness.Ultimately, the adoption of bio-based fibers goes beyond being an environmental alternative; it establishes a practical strategy for brands to create sustainable value, differentiate themselves in the market, and enhance long-term industry credibility.
