Abstract

(Background and Purpose) This study aims to quantitatively examine the alleyway usage patterns of Seoul Bike, the public bicycle system in Seoul, by integrating big data analytics with social network analysis. The research contributes to the broader goal of identifying spatial and design-related factors that support urban vitality. The conceptual framework is inspired by Jane Jacobs’s The Death and Life of Great American Cities, in which she highlights the importance of “small blocks and alleyways” as essential for fostering diversity and dynamic city life. Within this context, buses and subways are regarded as the “arteries and veins” of a superblock-based urban structure, while Seoul Bike functions as a “capillary” system that extends mobility into fine-grained alley networks often bypassed by conventional transit modes. (Method) The study employed 2,918,372 GPS trajectory records and 3,201,067 rental history records from Seoul Bike. At a macro scale, trajectory visualizations and heatmaps were used to illustrate the intensity and flow of movement across the city. DDegree centrality was computed to assess each station’s relative importance within the overall network. Furthermore, ego networks were constructed for selected regions to analyze microscale interactions, local clustering tendencies, and interstation linkages. A comparative analysis between regions was also conducted to reveal structural and behavioral differences. (Results) Two contrasting urban areas were selected for in-depth comparison: Yeongdeungpo (32 stations) and northern Gangnam (21 stations). In Yeongdeungpo, the ego network analysis revealed a dense and highly connected alley system, characterized by 36 cluster points, longer travel distances and durations, and slower speeds—suggesting destination-oriented travel behavior. By contrast, northern Gangnam exhibited a looser network structure, with only 8 cluster points and faster, shorter trips—features aligned with pass-through or commuting traffic. An analysis of amenity distributions found that Yeongdeungpo’s alleys hosted a continuous mix of commercial, manufacturing, and medical facilities, encouraging diverse everyday activities. Northern Gangnam showed a clear separation between commercial and residential zones, larger block sizes, and deeper alley structures, which likely hinder incidental usage and spontaneous access. (Conclusions) The findings underscore the importance of amenity diversity and alley network density in promoting active bicycle usage in local neighborhoods. Future research should integrate POI mapping, urban scene classification, and temporal dimensions—such as time of day and weekday variations—within a multidimensional analytical framework. These additions would support a more nuanced understanding of Seoul-Bike’s role in fine-scale urban mobility and its potential for enhancing urban liveliness from a design and planning perspective.
