Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Untact design, once focused solely on online digital environments, became the norm in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and its scope has expanded to include physical spaces and integrated online–offline environments. In particular, various methods are being attempted to create an environment that induces a contactless experience. To comprehensively systematize these attempts, this study aimed to collect physical evidence that triggers contactless experiences in spatial design and to categorize their design characteristics. The goal is to present spatial design indicators for transitioning to an untact environment that meets modern needs for safety and convenience. (Method) To categorize contactless experience–based spatial design, (1) criteria for type classification were detailed using major design factors derived from literature reviews and prior studies, and (2) the characteristics of each type were specified by analyzing cases based on untact space scenarios and evaluation factors. In this process, the current status of design strategies for each type was examined. (Results) The five spatial forms of contactless experience–based design are: Type A (unmanned system), which minimizes experience stages and sequentially connects physical evidence; Type B (user distribution), which provides spatial diversity, free user choice, and smart technology–based environments; Type C (movement division), which offers movement control with intuitive signs based on visual continuity; Type D (multi-purpose residential space), which diversifies the daily residential environment and expands familiar residential space as an alternative to the external environment; and Type E (outdoor open type), which offers high accessibility and various forms of open environments, such as glass partitions for visits. Additionally, each type ensured safety, convenience, and efficiency through simple and continuous configurations; safety sustainability through display or integrated control and management methods; and safety flexibility through diversity-based choices. (Conclusions) This study is significant in that it concretizes spatial design based on contactless experiences among the various untact environments attempted to date, synthesizing and systematizing it as a design strategy. The research results are expected to serve as guidelines for creating an optimal contactless environment that facilitates service access in a physical setting integrating online and offline, preventing the digitally disadvantaged from being excluded due to the online-oriented nature of many current solutions.
