Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In recent years, the intensification of urban density and limitations in land use have led to the expanded utilization of underground spaces, with subways emerging as the core mode of urban transportation. However, because of their enclosed and complex spatial configurations, underground environments pose significant challenges for rapid evacuation in the event of fires, explosions, or other disasters, thereby increasing the risk of large-scale casualties. Numerous domestic and international subway accident cases clearly illustrate these risks, and the growing number of transfer stations and increasing depths of subway facilities further exacerbate such vulnerabilities. Both structural and operational improvements are imperative for ensuring the safety of subway users. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the safety issues arising from the increasing complexity and depth of subway stations and to propose effective evacuation planning and spatial improvement strategies through evacuation simulations. (Method) This study utilized an Agent-Based Model (ABM) to analyze evacuation behavior in subway platform spaces. Evacuation flows were simulated using the AnyLogic platform by incorporating variables such as mobility, vision, walking speed, body size, and physical environmental data. Additionally, Space Syntax theory and J-graph analysis were applied to assess spatial connectivity, hierarchy, and visibility. This integrated approach enables a comprehensive understanding of how spatial configurations affect evacuation behavior, offering an empirical foundation for enhancing evacuation efficiency and safety in complex subway environments. (Results) The analysis revealed that subway station exits often exhibit limited spatial capacity and experience sudden crowd concentrations, which significantly undermine the rationality of space utilization during evacuation scenarios. The current exit configurations fail to accommodate the simultaneous convergence of large passenger volumes, resulting in obstructed evacuation flows and reduced overall efficiency. These findings empirically demonstrate that the configuration and layout of evacuation spaces in subway stations are decisive factors in ensuring safety during disasters. (Conclusions) Evacuation simulations using an ABM approach for recently constructed subway stations were conducted. The results confirmed that limited exit spaces and sudden crowd surges significantly reduced evacuation efficiency. However, improvements such as expanding exit forecourt areas and widening corridors contributed to stabilizing density levels and shortening the total evacuation time. Accordingly, this study provides empirical evidence that the form and layout of evacuation spaces critically influence evacuation safety in subway stations. Furthermore, this study offers foundational data for establishing rational design criteria for evacuation planning, thereby contributing to the enhancement of passenger safety in future subway facilities.
