Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Recently, complex commercial facilities have evolved from merely consumption-oriented spaces into complex cultural spaces that integrate entertainment, culture, and experience. In particular, F&B spaces have emerged as key experiential media and anchor retention programs that stimulate users’senses and foster emotional immersion. This study investigates how the spatial composition of F&B spaces in entertainment-type complex commercial facilities relates to users’ spatial experiences and derives design implications for experience-oriented space design. (Method) The study focused on entertainment-type complex commercial facilities, opened after 2020, with a gross floor area of 100,000㎡ or more and classified as complex shopping malls under Article 2 No. 15 of the Enforcement Decree of the Distribution Industry Development Act. THE Hyundai Seoul, Starfield Suwon, and Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science were selected as domestic cases, and Mitsui Shopping Park LALAPORT FUKUOKA, LALAPORT KADOMA, and American Dream as overseas cases. The analysis framework cross-examined spatial composition characteristics (structure, connection, and symbolism) and spatial experience characteristics (sensory, emotion, cognition, behavior, relationship) derived from prior research; spatial arrangement, circulation systems, program composition, and dwelling behavior in each case were compared and evaluated using qualitative matrix analysis. (Results) The analysis revealed that the structural composition induced sensory and cognitive experiences through the visual connection with the open space, and the connective composition showed active behavioral and relational experiences in the circular movement through the center space and core. In the symbolic composition, the emotional experience was reinforced through the thematic staging and brand identity, and in the complex composition, the three types worked complementarily to form a total immersion experience. In particular, in the domestic case, the behavior-oriented experience was pronounced in the linked structure that emphasized functional efficiency, and in the overseas case, the emotional and relational experience tended to deepen based on the multinuclear space and complex content. (Conclusions) This study empirically confirmed that the F&B space of an entertainment-type complex commercial facility has an experiential structure in which space composition characteristics and user experiential responses interact. These results emphasize the importance of an experience-oriented design strategy that promotes emotional immersion and social exchange beyond functional efficiency in the future F&B space planning and design of complex commercial facilities. This study has academic significance in that it reinterprets F&B space as a core experiential content of complex commercial facilities, and suggests that future research needs to empirically expand the experience structure through quantitative user data analysis in the future.
