Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The growing availability of national heritage data, supported by digital technologies and open data policies, has expanded its application across various fields. The rapid spread of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has accelerated the creation of heritage-based digital content, enabling broader applications in artistic production, exhibitions, education, and digital restoration. However, most prior studies have focused on data construction or technical implementation and have offered limited analysis of how generative AI learns from and utilizes national heritage data according to the data type. Addressing this gap, this study examines cases of generative AI–based heritage content cases to identify type-specific utilization characteristics and proposes strategies for digitally extending heritage content while preserving its original value and cultural context. (Method) National heritage was classified into three categories: cultural, intangible, and natural. Representative cases were selected for each type. A structural analytical framework comprising data type, data learning, and data utilization was applied to examine how generative AI interacts with each form of heritage data and compare the distinctive usage patterns observed across types. (Results) The findings indicate that the use of heritage data by generative AI is strongly shaped by the intrinsic properties of each data type. Cultural heritage data, including records, photographs, and scans of physical objects, support the realistic reproduction of form, texture, and color. These characteristics make them particularly suitable for exhibitions, educational content, and audiovisual content that require historical accuracy. Intangible heritage data consisting of performances, music, and movement with temporal and performative qualities enable AI models to learn patterns of vocalization, rhythm, singing style, and motion. This facilitates applications such as the reproduction or enhancement of traditional sounds and provision of real-time feedback for learning. Natural heritage data composed of terrain, landscapes, and ecological elements contain irregular spatial and temporal features that allow generative AI to produce either realistic landscape reconstructions or abstract artistic visualizations. These results demonstrate that the nature of each data type determines how generative AI reconstructs or transforms national heritage, and the types of content it can effectively support. (Conclusions) This study confirms that generative AI functions as a technology capable of faithful reconstruction and creative expansion of national heritage content. In addition to describing individual cases, this study contributes to academia by offering a structural framework that clarifies the relationship between heritage data types and AI utilization patterns. Practically, this research highlights the need for integrated pipelines linking data collection, refinement, learning, and application, as well as strategies for purpose-driven data selection and structuring. The proposed framework provides a foundation for future research and production of AI-based national heritage content.
