Abstract

Chimerism is characterized by the presence of multiple genetically distinct cell lines within an individual and leading to inconsistencies between samples collected from different body sites (hair, tissue, blood, et al.). This study aims to enhance the accuracy of interpretation of DNA profiling and ensure legal reliability by advancing understanding of chimerism. The investigation explores the diverse causes of chimerism, including congenital chimerism (twin blood chimerism, vanishing twin syndrome et al.) and acquired chimerism (organ transplantation, blood transfusion et al.) resulting from medical interventions. In addition, through several reported cases related to chimerism, potential errors that can occur in forensic DNA analysis, such as personal identification and kinship analysis, are presented. Furthermore, forensic aspects that should be considered for ensuring the accuracy of DNA analysis were addressed by describing various cases (such as mosaicism) that are not chimerism but may cause difficulty in interpreting DNA profiles and the effects of social change.
