Abstract

This paper attempts to integrate the principles of communication into speaking instruction syllabus based on communicative language teaching approaches. It is an outgrowth of the status quo that despite the well established communication theories there is paucity of efforts in defining their relevance to education of speaking skills. In this exploratory research it is proposed that the following elements be incorporated in the speaking instruction syllabus: (1) body language, (2) turn-taking, overlap, adjacency pair, discourse structure, (3) general principles of discourse, and (4) indirect speech and politeness as required for interpersonal communication. This proposal may not only be applicable to classroom instruction but also provide a general framework in devising textbooks for enhancement of speaking skills for the learners of Korean as a foreign language.
