Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the way how main characters form an attachment to a place, and this sense of place affects the attitude toward life in Willa Cather’s A Lost Lady (1923). Critics have mainly focused on Marian Forrester’s sexual aberration, the meaning of her adulterous life, and Neil Herberts’ credibility as a narrator since 1930s. However, a space named ‘Forrester place’ and its relation to people would be analyzed depending on Yi-Fu Tuan’s frame of ‘Space’ and ‘Place.’ If ‘Space’ can be explained as ‘freedom, abstractness, and movement,’ ‘Place’ can be defined as ‘security, personal intimacy, and pause.’ People acquire ‘sense of place’ when they become acquainted with the meaning and value of a place. Captain Forrester, who has bought a place and build a house there, know the beauty of that space and keep his faith on the place regardless of its productivity. He protects and spares the land no matter how difficult his economic situations are. Niel, who is the nephew of one of captain’s friends, doesn’t lose his affection for the place. For Niel, the Forrester place was his ‘home.’ He appreciates its beauty and admires the Forresters. Even though he is disappointed at Marian in the end, his firm faith toward the Forresters keeps Niel considering the place as his home place. Marian, captain Forrester, who is her father figure, is her home. When the captain dies, she no longer regards the place as her home, and lets a shyster develop the place as he likes. Without Mr. Forrester, Forrester place becomes an abstract space for her. Ivy Peters doesn’t keep and protect any living beings. He insults and exploits Marian and ousts her from the place to California. He drains the marsh and turns it into a wheat field. He doesn’t have any capacity for love, so it was impossible for him to own a sense of place. Intimate experience of place allows us to keep and spare it. Therefore, a ‘sense of place’ enables us to be the protector of our environment and it provides us with a life worth living.
