Abstract

It is a natural inclination of human beings that regards themselves as a part of the expanded universal existence rather than just grasps the sense of being of themselves in the interaction with their surroundings. It is possible because of their imagination. Among the several natural objects, tree has been the major object of the imagination for a long time. That is to say, we have found not only an anthropomorphic figure in tree, but also the universal providence and order by the aid of our unique imagination In this respect, this paper aims to discuss the detailed aspect of working of the literary imagination in the recent fictions that embody the motif of the tree-metamorphosis. The subject fictions are The Vegetarian by Han Gang that shows the point of view of each of the narrators surrounding a vegetarian character, The Private Life of Plants by Lee Seung-woo that depicts a story of a frustrated love quoting various myths of tree-metamorphosis, and The Life Story of Humanist Mr. Musojak by Lee Cheong-jun that expanding the motif of metamorphosis into flower-metamorphosis. The subject fictions are imbued with the notion of love and sacredness (or eternity), which have closely corresponded with trees in various myths, fiction, poetry, etc.. And it is r through the tree-metamorphosis motif. The Private Life of Plants is providing the possibility of botanic love(form of plant) which against to fleshly love(form of animal) by synthesizing various tree myths. Following this form of love, the theme of the transition from fleshly reproduction and sexual competition to the plant-metamorphosis myth is presented in The Life Story of Humanist Mr. Musojak. In case of The Vegetarian, the escape from the oppressive carnivorous-patriarchal tradition is triggered by motifs of tree-metamorphosis. In addition, seeking for such prospect of love is based on the perception that it is possible only by inverting or reversing the logic of reality. Such modes of inversion and reversion which is represented by trees are specified by the dialectical synthesis of opposing concepts collapsing the dichotomy such as ‘finitude and eternity’, ‘death and regeneration’ and ‘reality and dreams’. In terms of the tree-metamorphosis motif, these characteristics and the structure of the fictions show the humanistic imagination that has been attempted to reconsider the reality recognition.
