Abstract
This study examines how the acts of landscape recollection heal the traumas of postcolonial subjects in Jhumpa Lahiri’s _The Lowland_. In this novel, the environmental changes done by human agency touches on the topics of environmental justice and those of deep ecology. Deep ecology is usually explained as the simplification of ornamental elements about the (egoistic) self; rather, the characters in The Lowland seek for establishing their sound minds by embracing fragments of diverse memories about the past environments where they have gone through all sorts of troubles. Each character does not cling to the lost landscapes (or contexts) any longer; he or she wants to be faithful to the present moment, reconstructing his or her own mental as well as physical contexts. Such psychological focus implies that this novel has reinterpreted mainstream ecocriticism influenced by deep ecology in the postcolonial context, for postcolonial ecocriticism─which is often typified by the resistance to ecological colonialism─has a tendency to pay little attention to the psychological responses of each subject within the physical nature.
