초록
Unlike James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851), an early American novelist who is often praised as a champion of the American Frontier, Washington Irving (1783-1859) is often regarded as a writer inclined toward traditional European culture. It is, however, relatively easy to find a great deal of passages drawing upon the American West together with its native inhabitants also known as Indians and its natural environment referred as the Prairies. More importantly, his views on the wilderness and the Native Americans change over time in his career as a writer. This change takes the form of transition from romanticization to a rather objective or neutral portrayal of the new American Frontier. The transformation can be clearly noticed through the comparison of Irving’s early and later works, especially that of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. (1819-20) and A Tour on the Prairies (1835).
