Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine, from the perspective of ecofeminism, the literary philosophy of Aphra Behn who was active in the Restoration period. Ecofeminist literary criticism is the combination of ecologic environmental criticism and feminist literary criticism, as it was inspired by the presumption that female environmental problems were rooted in the male-oriented suppressive social structure. Ecofeminist also demands a huge transformation in the ways of establishing mutual relationships between humans and nature, men and women, and human and human. In relation to the ecofeminist literary criticism, Aphra Behn was undoubtedly a leader who practiced herself the ecologic feministic way of writing. In Behn’s period, 17th century Britain, most male writers began to be interested in the theme of exploration of women. As a female writer, she deeply thought about such themes and successfully established her own unique position in the British history of play. In this paper, her main works of The Rover and Lucky Chance are looked into to study the mutually conflictive female characters and their nontraditional behaviors through the medium of women’s sex, exploring the potential of new British female play going against the existing literary tradition. Behn is recognized as the first-ever female writer who presented the possibility that social order could be fundamentally transformed by stressing new woman self character and female writers’proper positioning in the society.
