Abstract
In Sula. Morrison attempted to convey racial pain without losing humor by exploring at least universal ethical issues in Western white society, such as tension between individuals and society, and unique cultural inheritance as a black American, focusing on the problems of good and evil. Western ecofeminism criticizes the paradigm centered on competition and growth by combining feminism and ecology, while emphasizing women's caring behavior, their experiences, their interests in nature and others. By overviewing and examining the historical background and formation process, major controversies and theoretical strategies in which the Western ecofeminism theory emerged, I have introduced the theoretical insights, conceptual frameworks and methodologies of Western ecofeminism in non-Western regions. Sula deals with the special lives of black women through love, friendship, betrayal, understanding, and conflict. The protagonist of this work, 'Sula', shows the independent and adventurous life caused by a 'free fall' outside the community and the courage to take the risk of the result. She rejects the traditional female role defined by her community and shows the new destiny of mankind, while at the same time showing how black women overcome their consciousness as other and seek their subjective self-consciousness in the double oppression of racism and sexual discrimination Therefore, in this paper, I would like to suggest that it is possible to create an alternative approach to overcome the limitations of ‘sustainable development-discourse' only when the orientation of values seeking sustainability of life encounters feminist as a counter-discourse. In this context, I like to explore Morrison's Sula wth her free-falling experimental life which refuses the patriarchal and conservative values of society and search for her own identity and freedom within the ecofeministic ethics.
