Abstract

This paper aims to analyze Louisa May Alcott's Hospital Sketches through the viewpoint of Bakhtin's ‘Ethics of Dialogue' , focusing on the change of Nurse Periwinkle's attitude toward herself and other patients in the narrative. Louisa May Alcott published the work based on her six-week experience as an army nurse during the Civil War. The speaker of this work, unlike her playful tone at first, shows an increasingly mature and profound insight for the people. The process of the speaker's transformation is well explained through Bakhtin's concept of self. Bakhtin explains that human identity is in the process of being newly created through interaction with others in specific events, or through actions that respond to other people's needs. Bakhtin's point of view makes us see that every respond of ours changes our concept of self identity. In Hospital Sketches, nurse Periwinkle changes into new person while endeavoring to respond to soldiers who are at the cross road of life and death. She overcomes her prejudices and become a merciful person who embraces every pain and despair. She restores the vital strength in the community in giving herself to the soldiers in needs.
