Abstract

This article reconceptualizes Mary Shelley’s The Last Man as a depopulation/repopulation narrative, rather than a disaster or plague narrative. The Last Man, as a narrative of the dehumanization and repopulation of the earth, traces a process through which the radical reduction of human numbers brings about the earth’s beautification by plant and animal life. I argue that The Last Man’s uniqueness as a novel, and especially its ecocritical import, can only be fully understood if we take into account its narrative of the ecological changes that take place on the earth after the destruction of the human species, as well as its narrative of the fall of the human species. The Last Man pushes the quintessential Malthusian environmental insight—the insight that the earth is a finite and fragile system—to its logical conclusion and beyond, and considers the great environmental price of collective human presence on the earth.
