초록

본 논문의 목적은 메리 올리버(Mary Oliver)의 「해오라기」(“Egrets”), 「해오라기」(“The Egret”), 「대머리수리」(“Vultures”), 「거북이」(“The Turtle”), 「백조」(“Swan”), 「기러기」(“Wild Geese”), 「왕국에 들어가기」(“Entering the Kingdom”)에 나타난 동물의 시적 재현을 분석하여, 시인이 "살아있는, 전기적인 존재를 언어로 되돌려" 줄 수 있다는 엘리자베스 코스텔로의 대답을 설명하는 것이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explicate Elizabeth Costello's mystic answer in The Lives of Animals that poet can “return the living, electric being to language,” by analyzing Mary Oliver’s animal poems including “Egrets,” “The Egret,” “Vultures,” “The Turtle,” “Swan,” “Wild Geese” and “Entering the Kingdom.” The poetic strategy Oliver uses in her poems about animals is to capture the ecopoetic moment. In this moment, the animal’s ecocentric view stands out in contrast to the homocentric worldview and Oliver constantly and intentionally attempts to engage the readers in this moment. In this ecopoetic moment when the dichotomous frame is dismantled and the ecocentric worldview of animals that grasps itself in relation to each other is experienced, the poet and reader both experience not only oneness with nature but also healing for a while. At the same time, these poems also show the difficulties and limitations of human experience of healing and peace in nature. The poet and the reader, who are living in the frame of the homocentric dichotomy, feel the sense of alienation from nature more acutely through poetry, and at the same time long for the restoration of the broken relationship.
