Abstract
This study explores how George Perkins Marsh’s trans-Atlantic perspective shaped his conservation ideas globally. The rise of industrialism and its destruction of nature led Marsh to draw lessons from Europe’s past management practices. He emphasized preserving America’s pristine nature while advocating for the wise use of resources. Contrary to prevailing views of his time, Marsh warned that human activities could severely disrupt natural systems. He promoted long-term ecological solutions over hasty engineering fixes to damaged environments. Marsh argued that sound conservation practices ensuring sustainability would preserve wild nature’s diversity, where each element harmonizes with others. He noted that Europe had lost this harmony, which he saw as vital to American nature’s identity. His environmental ethics moved beyond nineteenth-century transcendental divinity, highlighting ecological reality in human-nature interactions on a planetary scale; it anticipates a responsible global conservation in the Anthropocene.
