이개의 기형은 이개형성 부전(anotia)에서부터 이개 모양의 사소한 변형(minor deformity)에 이르기까지 다양하게 발생한다. 이개 기형의 분류는 Altmann(1965)과 Marx (1926)에 의해 기형의 정도에 따라 각각 marcrotia와 mi-crotia(Altmann) 혹은 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree microtia(Marx)로 분류한 것이 널리 알려져 있으나 이는 단순히 형태학적 분류라고 할 수 있다. Tan과 Porter(2005)는 발생학적으로 이개의 형태가 완성되는 태생 9주를 기준으로 그 이전에 발생한 형태이상은 기형(malformation), 이개연골의 형태가 완성된 9주 이후에 오는 이개의 형태이상은 변형(deformation)이라고 하는 것이 더 합리적인 분류라고 하였는데 이는 이개기형을 치료하는 방법이 크게 다르다는 점에 근거한 분류법으로 좀 더 합리적이라고 할 수 있다.1) 여기서는 태생 9주 이전의 심한 형태학적 이상과 9주 이후에 발생하는 이개 변형을 포함하는 이개기형의 분류에 대해 이개의 발생학적 원인에 대한 설명을 중심으로 알아보고자 한다.
